Beijing (CNN) -- The death toll from Thursday's earthquake in southwest China is at least 16, with more than 160 injured, a local official told CNN.

The 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit near the border with Myanmar, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At least not many died, I believe it is because Japan makes sure that most homes and buildings are quake safe. They get a few every year, so they try and make sure the structures are secure.

Seems like a lot for a 5.4
its up to 22 dead as of now
That is alot for a 5.4.
I would have to look back, but I also happen to remember that many of the 5.0 to 6.0 had many deaths around the world over the past few years. Just depends on where the locations are.

it was shallow, just like me, not you,,..
Very surprised that a little quake like this caused the deaths and damage it did. It was also 34km below the surface which is crazy to cause that kind of damage.

conspiracy?
Its interesting that it will have more coverage because of that, though; I remember some 2 months ago a really big one in Pakistan was in a desert, killing noone, so was scarcely reported, but as a symptom is more important that the ones like todays.

The Michio Kakus are gonna have trouble explaining everything is normal etc :)

i love you too.. hairyarmpits and all.. what ever happend to "natural?"
Location means everything. In fact it makes me wonder where the most deaths were if they were in smaller communities this would be normal, because like I said before most of the Modern big buildings in the cities have been built to withstand even an 8.0 quake. So this means either smaller villages were effected or older building built before they started making them quake proof.
