If you are looking for a cheaper way to purifier water besides the unit that Jsnip has been talking about which draws water from the air, I got an electric Distiller for $150 that makes about 4 gallons a day. Ofcourse it needs power and a water source so keep that in mind.

Even if there is never a water shortage, purifying your tap water saves money and the environment VS buying purified or spring water. If you don't know by now, drinking tap water straight is unbelievably detrimental to your health. Read more -> http://www.bartenblends.com/alternative-...?f=16&t=48
I just recently bought a Big Berkey filter, the videos and recommendations on the internet say that it is very good.
The reason RO filters require water to be pumped through them is because gravity is not nearly strong enough to pull water through a tight enough membrane that would remove virus and bacteria. That is why Big Berkey is Big Rip Off. In fact, all Berkey filters are banned in California and Iowa for this reason. On the Berkey site they use bogus propaganda and claim their being banned was wrong and they have a bunch of fake comments made to look like real people supporting them and bashing California. Well theres plenty of working filters that are not banned in California and Iowa, so I guess the 'conspiracy' only applies to them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but on the bright side they are decent quality carbon filters and will make your water taste much better, just make sure to boil it first if you are using water from outside.

What water purifier would you suggest?
If you want something that doesn't require electricity you can get hand held pump filters from katadyn , they work basically like an RO filter.
If you're not worried about power outage for whatever reason, you can use a distiller, an RO filter, or the unit Jsnip has been talking about
which draws moisture from the air and RO filters it. filtrete filters
