There's just a few hours from touch down, but they're claiming as high as 50-60 mph winds... here.....in Chicago!

Does that make sense?

I can tell you with a certainty that winds gave not gotten any where NEAR those numbers in Chicago!

Me thinks a lot of this, is made up bull$hit on their part.

I could throw a stone and hit South Jersey. I am about 50 miles from the beach... it's within the path of the storm as seen on the weather channel.

The same really.

***3:00pm, 20-30mph winds with occasional gusts to 40mph. The rain seems to fluctuate between light and moderate. I have not seen any heavy rain.

I still maintain that this storm has been totally hyped by the MSM. They are deliberately searching out low-lying areas to show flooding and going to the beach to show the most turbulent ocean activity, but this is what they always do.

Watching the MSM to get the real truth is a waste of time.

See this is weird. Did you say you were South of Jersey?

Cool....are you going to strap yourself to a tree with a video camera to give us LIVE Action!!! ? lol

I remember seeing earlier weather channel reporters looking to break into the "big time" MSM by doing flat out Stupid reporting. Surprised some of them weren't killed, all to get their face on camera. silly imo... ideal job for cd.000001. lol

The wind is picking up a little bit. 30-40mph steady winds, gusting to 50mph. Rain is on and off now. It comes down hard and then stops completely... weird.

Do us / yourself a favor, don't put up a ladder in those winds to try and un-clog the gutter. :) Looks like landfall coming soon.

GOOD LUCK!

It appears to be calming down a bit. The rain has stopped. Wind steady at 20-30mph. Gusts up to 40mph.

Staten Island. Thousands without power. Mine going in and out. Very strong sustained wind all day. Now it seems to be 30-40 sustained 40-70 bursts but obviously it's just my best guess. Streets around me were flooded last night even before any rain (and there still isn't much) as the kill van kull was already overflowed.

Thanks Steven. I also read there were some heavy gusts reported there. I hope your power doesn't go out.

There was no winds sustained above 50mph in my area today. There were some stonger gusts, but they never were above 60mph.

Media was predicting 70-100mph sustained winds... that never happened.

Wind more intense now. Transformers blowing up all over the island. I am just outside zone A which was evacuated. So far no water on my block. One minute in a few directions though and there's water on land.

High tide was 8:55pm. That will make it worse no doubt. Be careful.

Yes. No problems here. Light drizzle, wind has died down considerably and the heavy gusts are gone. The power never went out, but the lights did flicker a few times during the day.

Sandy's US toll climbs to 35; 8 million-plus without power

Residents and businesses began a massive clean-up effort Tuesday, even as large parts of the region remained without power, and transportation in the New York metropolitan area was at a standstill.

NEW YORK — The misery of superstorm Sandy's devastation grew Tuesday as millions along the U.S. East Coast faced life without power or mass transit for days, and huge swaths of New York City remained eerily quiet. The U.S. death toll climbed to 35, many of the victims killed by falling trees, and rescue work continued.

The storm that made landfall in New Jersey on Monday evening with hurricane force cut power to more than 8.2 million across the East and put the presidential campaign on hold just one week before Election Day.

New York was among the hardest hit, with its financial heart closed for a second day. The storm caused the worst damage in the 108-year history of the city's subway system, and there was no indication of when the largest U.S. transit system would be rolling again.

But the full extent of the damage in New Jersey was being revealed as morning arrived. Emergency crews fanned out to rescue hundreds.

A hoarse-voiced New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave bleak news at a morning news conference: Seaside rail lines washed away. No safe place on the state's barrier islands for him to land. Parts of the coast still under water.

"It is beyond anything I thought I'd ever see," he said. "It is a devastating sight right now."

The death toll from Sandy in the U.S. included several killed by falling trees. Sandy also killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Eastern Seaboard.

Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights. New York City's three major airports remained closed.

"This was a devastating storm, maybe the worst that we have ever experienced," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
